Schubertiade
Franz Schubert’s 'Winterreise', by Chordis Ensemble
With Schubertiade, the ensemble Chordis (trio with Romantic guitars and countertenor) presents excerpts from Franz Schubert’s Winterreise (D.911), composed in 1827 to texts by Wilhelm Müller.
In Winterreise, Schubert gives the piano (interpreted here by two guitars) equal importance to the voice. The instrumental parts enhance the poetic atmosphere with restless syncopations, dramatic tremolos, and sharp accents, vividly evoking the imagery of nature: howling winds, flowing water, and distant post horns.
The collection reflects themes of loss, longing, and the passage of time, with winter as a metaphor for death. The protagonist’s journey remains enigmatic, and invite the audience to find their own interpretations of this dark and sorrowful odyssey.
Chordis Ensemble
Chordis is a Brussels-based ensemble formed by core members Ieva Baltmiskyte, Cristina Mura, and Vincent Weymann. The ensemble explores the rich repertoire for plucked instruments and voice, spanning from the dawn of the Baroque era to the Romantic period. Their programs include works by early Baroque pioneers such as Monteverdi and Kapsberger, as well as the timeless songs of Schubert.
Dedicated to fostering an intimate connection between the performers and their audience, Chordis creates concert experiences that are both personal and reflective. By cultivating a sense of closeness and interaction, the ensemble allows listeners to not only appreciate the nuances of the music but also engage in a deeper introspection. This connection transforms each performance into a shared emotional journey, inviting the audience to explore their inner thoughts through the lens of the music.
