Artist’s tie pin by Henry van de Velde
This tie pin, a personal piece of jewelry belonging to Henry van de Velde, reflects his keen eye for detail and his dedication to refined elegance. It features his monogram, a signature motif that recurs throughout his work.
Van de Velde often integrated his interlaced initials into his creations, such as pendants for loved ones; including one made in 1896 for his wife, Maria Sèthe.
The monogram became his official signature when he registered it in Germany on May 31st, 1899, during a period of growing influence there.
From then on, it served as a studio mark and appeared on various objects based on his designs: stamped on furniture, punched into silverware and metalwork, applied to ceramics, and featured in his jewelry.
Characteristic of his Art Nouveau style, this monogram, with its fluid, elegant lines, is both decorative and functional, helping to identify the object's owner.
It fully embodies Van de Velde’s aesthetic and artistic vision.
It is part of the collection of the Design Museum Ghent, our main partner for the Belgian Art Nouveau exhibition.
